Tidy Up Your Squarespace Backend in 4 Simple Steps

Messy desk with papers and laptop representing digital clutter and the need to tidy a Squarespace website backend

A cluttered Squarespace backend can make even the simplest updates feel overwhelming. Drafts pile up, images get lost in folders, and finding the right page can feel like a treasure hunt.

But here’s the good news: tidying up your backend doesn’t have to be a big, daunting project. With a clear system and just three simple steps, you can declutter, streamline, and create a backend that actually works for you—not against you.

Not only will this save you time, it will reduce stress and make updating your website a much more enjoyable experience.

Step 1: Audit and Delete Unused Content

The first step is all about getting rid of what you don’t need.

How to do it:

  • Review all pages, blog posts, and products. Ask yourself: Do I really need this live?

  • Delete drafts, duplicates, and outdated content that no longer serves your visitors.

  • Archive anything important but not immediately needed. Squarespace allows you to archive pages so you can restore them later if needed.

Extra tips:

  • Check for old images, PDFs, or downloads that are no longer relevant. Delete or archive them to reduce clutter.

  • Keep a “content inventory” spreadsheet to track what exists and what can go—it makes audits faster in the future.

Why it matters: Every piece of content you remove makes your backend lighter, faster, and easier to navigate.

Step 2: Organise Pages and Navigation

A tidy backend isn’t just about deleting—it’s about structure. A well-organised navigation saves you time and creates a smoother experience for your visitors.

How to do it:

  • Group related pages into folders (for example, Services, About, Blog).

  • Rename pages with clear, consistent titles so you can find them instantly.

  • Keep your main navigation minimal—aim for no more than 5 main menu items.

Extra tips:

  • Consider using sub-pages instead of long main menus—it keeps things clean and intuitive.

  • Periodically review your navigation as you add new content. Ask: Does this still make sense?

Why it matters: Clean navigation helps visitors find what they need quickly, and it makes editing your site much less stressful.

Step 3: Streamline Blocks, Sections, and Images

Now that your pages are in order, focus on the finer details. Blocks, sections, and images can quickly create a messy backend if left unchecked.

How to do it:

  • Delete any unused blocks, code snippets, or duplicated sections.

  • Consolidate repeated sections—for instance, a “Call to Action” block used on multiple pages can be standardised.

  • Name your blocks clearly when possible (especially code blocks or embedded forms).

Step 4: Image Library & Assets Folder Tips

Squarespace now lets you create folders in your Assets folder, which is a game-changer for organisation. You can sort images into categories like Blog, Products, or Social, making it much faster to find the file you need.

Important note: Only images can be managed directly in the Assets folder. PDFs, downloads, and other file types need to be managed via the link editor on the page or block where they’re used.

Important warning: Always double-check before deleting images. If an image is still in use on a page, blog post, or product, deleting it will break that content. When in doubt, move unused images into an “Archive” folder rather than deleting them outright.

Extra tips:

  • Use “Summary Blocks” or reusable sections instead of duplicating content—less clutter, more efficiency.

  • Regularly review your Assets folder, moving old or unused images into an Archive folder to keep the main library tidy.

Why it matters: A tidy Assets folder means less time hunting for images, fewer broken pages, and a smoother editing experience overall. PDFs and other files are safe as long as you manage them through the link editor—but keeping track of their use is just as important for a smooth workflow.

Bonus Tip: Schedule Regular Mini-Tidies

The real secret to a forever-clean backend is consistency. Set a recurring calendar reminder every 1–2 months to do a quick tidy. Even 20 minutes can make a huge difference.

  • Delete old drafts.

  • Check for unused images or downloads.

  • Review navigation and page structure.

Regular mini-tidies prevent overwhelm and keep your Squarespace backend a joy to use.

A tidy Squarespace backend is more than just organisation—it’s about creating a workflow that saves you time, reduces stress, and makes your website a tool, not a burden.

Start with these four steps today, and you’ll feel the difference immediately.
